For some women, getting pregnant seem like an impossible task. For others, it is as easy as tossing out their contraction. 1. Figure out when you ovulate
If you have a regular period, you ovulate about two weeks before the period comes. For those with irregular cycles, it is harder to predict ovulation, but it occurs 12-16 days before the start of your next period. If you are unsure, there are ovulation prediction kits sold at drug stores. The kits test urine for luteinizing hormone, the hormone that causes the ovaries to release an egg. Three days after a positive test result is the right time for you to have sex to increase the chance of becoming pregnant, according to American Pregnancy Association.
2. Have sex often (and at the right time)
When you know when your eggs release from the ovary, you can plan to have sex during the most fertile days. Those are usually three days before ovulation until the day you ovulate. Keep in mind that sperm can survive for 3-6 days. If you’re not sure, try to have sex every other day to ensure you have sperm in your fallopian tubes whenever your eggs are released.
3. Have a healthy body weight
Research has shown that overweight women can reduce their odds of becoming pregnant. Having too much body fat causes interference with ovulation. Therefore, losing 5-10 percent of body weight could improve the fertility. On the other hand, women who are too thin can have an even more difficult time getting pregnant. This is because they often get an irregular period or stop ovulating.
4. Eat healthy food
In additional to daily healthy diets, you can take a supplement containing folic acid. You should also get vitiation B from dark green vegetables, beans, orange juice, etc. It is advised that while you are trying to get pregnant, eat lower amounts of high-mercury type fish such as shark, tilefish, tuna, and swordfish. Lastly, it is best to consume less than two cups of coffee a day, if you drink coffee.
5. Give up alcohol (and smoking too)
That’s one way to plan for a healthy pregnancy ahead. That’s because once you are pregnant, you should not consume any alcohol at all. But it is also safest to get rid of alcohol when a woman is trying to get pregnant. According to American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a moderate to heavy levels of alcohol drinking can make it difficult for a woman to get pregnant. The same goes with chemicals found in the cigarette; those can speed up the loss rate of your eggs.
6. Take a prenatal vitamin
Women trying to conceive should start taking prenatal vitamin even before they become pregnant. This helps them figure out the type that works well for their system and stay on it during pregnancy. You should take a daily multi-vitamin at least 400 micrograms per day of vitamin B and folic. This helps prevent birth defects in a baby’s spine and brain. Getting a head start is always a good idea since the neural tube develops into the spine and brain 3-4 weeks after conception happened (before many women realize they are pregnant).
7. Boost up sperm count
Your partner can help by having healthy and plenty sperm. Several things that can help include: cutting back on alcohol, skip tobacco and recreational drugs, try to maintain a healthy weight, and don’t use tubs and saunas (because heat kills sperms). The sooner your partner makes the change, the better. It takes a while for sperms to mature.
8. Know when to seek help
Most women who try to get pregnant typically succeed within the first six months. Statistics say about 8 out of 10 people are pregnant by then. If you have not conceived after that and you are under 35 years old, it is probably okay to give it another year or so before seeking help. If you are 35-40 years old and have not conceived after six months, you may want to get help from an expert then. If you are over 40, you should start investigation and treatment right away. Fertility declines as you get older.
